FAQs

No! There is no expectation that singers read music. In fact, no experience is necessary.

Yes.  Please feel free to come along and sing with us or just sit and watch.

Singers pay £65 per term. Terms run for a minimum of 10 sessions, though some are longer — so the cost per session can be even lower than £6.50 which compares very favourably with similar choirs in the Cheltenham area. Your first session is free, so there's nothing to lose by coming along. A more flexible payment plan will be available from September 2026 offering, amongstly other things,  monthly payment.

We have a simple uniform - black with a splash of red.  Most people are able to source this simple uniform from their own wardrobe.  We prioritise being comfortable during performances.  As a relatively new choir (started in autumn 2024), we've been taking our time with developing our identity.

Socialising is at the our core of what we do so expect pub nights, quizzes, apres rehearsal nibbles ... etc.  Make a suggestion!

We sing a variety of musical genres, from rock to pop, musicals and folk, and world music to modern choral pieces. Our choir is all about exploration, fun, and making beautiful music together.

Yourself! And any music you've been given at previous rehearsals - oh, and a pencil, and a sense of fun.

We focus on local events that benefit local charities, communities, and businesses - such as at Warden Hill Primary School's Christmas Fayre, John Lewis Christmas sing, Sue Ryder's Celebrate a Life, Sue Ryder's Starlight Hike, the Suffolks Street Markets, and the Reddings Community Centre's event.

No, feel free to participate as much or as little in the choir rehearsals, socials, and performances.

Looking like we belong together rather than looking identical is our aim.  Therefore, we usually suggest clothing colours and seasonal decorations (e.g., tinsel at Christmas).

The Curious Choir is available for booking for events and private functions such as for life events.  We love giving back to the wider community and have been invited to sing at events supporting wonderful causes.  Please feel free to get in touch if you have an event which requires a choir or a group of singers.

A community choir is a welcoming non-auditioned inclusive environment to come, sing and meet people - regardless of previous experience, musical ability and age.  'Community choirs' in the Cheltenham area typically fall into two categories locally run and centrally run:

  • locally run
    • rehearse and perform in and around Cheltenham
    • leader and accompanists live and work in the Cheltenham area
    • often raising money and awareness for local causes
    • a bit like your favourite independent cafe but in choir form
    • the Curious Choir fits into this category
  • centrally run
    • part of a large network of choirs often franchised at the local level
    • leader and accompanist often travel from outside the Cheltenham area and run rehearsals in multiple locations across the three counties
    • tend to focus performances on glitzy massed concerts
    • a bit like the big box chain supermarkets that have taken over the Britain's high streets
    • this popular format of choirs is gaining criticism for crushing the locally run choirs out of existence

No we don't use backing tracks! We're a choir - not a Karaoke. Being accompanied by a living, breathing, trained and talented pianist supports the choir in a way that no backing track can. Performing with a backing track might be the most cost effective way of maximising profits but its nearly always at the expense of the musicality for the singers and income for another musician (the accompanist). We at the Curious Choir prioritise giving back to the local community over padded pockets.

It may be surprising that our FAQs contain 'Other community choirs around Cheltenham'.  At the Curious Choir, we're proud of our achievements in the short time we've been in existence. Both our Monday afternoon and Thursday evening rehearsals are gently growing and we've performed in numerous diverse local settings (see our news).  That being said, Cheltenham is crowded when it comes to choirs, particularly as the large nationwide choir networks with deep marketing pockets squeeze out the little local choirs. We strive to champion the little local choirs - not just for our own self interest, but for the love all things local and community.  On that basis, here's a list of singing opportunities non-network community choirs around Cheltenham:

  • Cheltenham Singers
  • Cheltenham Children's Choir
  • Cheltenham Youth Choir
  • Churchdown Community Singers
  • Mid Life Choirsis
  • Word of Mouth
  • Take Note
  • Musicality

If you manage a choir not yet on this list or would like to add your links here, please contact us with the details.
